Vascular disease may manifest in many ways. In your annual assessment, you will have your blood pressure and pulse checked, and your heart evaluated for murmurs and abnormal rhythms. A lipid profile usually accompanies the assessment to identify risk for cardiovascular risk.
Heart & Blood Vessels
A general examination of the major muscle groups for tone, and strength, as well as joint stability and mobility is included in your annual assessment. This gives information about the peripheral nervous system, as well as inflammatory disorders that may have insidious onset.
Musculoskeletal
Respiratory
The most common respiratory illnesses can be detected by history and examination. An annual assessment includes examination of the sinuses, ears nose and throat, as well as the lungs and chest for any signs of dysfunction.
Gastrointestinal
The abdomen is evaluated for any physical anomalies such as hernias or enlarged organs like the liver, kidneys, and spleen. A comprehensive metabolic profile is also done to examine liver and kidney function.
Nervous System
Assessment of the cranial nerves, balance and coordination can expose subtle changes that may signal neurologic dysfunction, which may sometimes indicate changes in the brain. This is included in your annual examination, and records are kept for continual assessment of progression.
Reproductive
An annual examination typically includes assessment of the reproductive organs, breast examinations and pap smears in women, and prostate and testicular exams for men. The PSA test is also used as an assessment tool for prostate cancer screening, and is usually a part of the exam in men 40 yrs and older.
